US Prosecutors Fight To Keep Accused CIA Leaker In Jail
CIA employee Asif Rahman is charged with violating the Espionage Act
For The Dissenter Newsletter, which I publish, Chip Gibbons reported on the latest developments in CIA employee Asif Rahman’s case.
Rahman is accused of violating the Espionage Act when he disclosed documents that showed Israel’s preparations for a strike against Iran.
According to Chip, at a hearing last week, “Rahman's defense scored an early victory. Throughout the proceedings, Magistrate Judge Ivan Davis was openly skeptical if not outright hostile to prosecutors’ arguments that—despite a "Pretrial Services" report recommending Rahman’s release and ample precedent involving similarly situated defendants—the CIA employee should remain in detention.”
“Ultimately,” Chip added, “Davis not only rejected a government request to hold Rahman in jail but also refused to grant them a stay of his order pending an appeal.”
The United States government appealed, which stayed the order. Prosecutors will be before District Judge Patricia Tolliver Giles in the Eastern District of Virginia on December 12.
